I95 Welcome Center

The State Board of Transportation partnered with Visit Savannah, Visit Tybee Island, and the Golden Isles Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, to design a Visitors Center like no other.  They wanted an immersive exhibit experience that would give visitors a feel for the wonders of this area.

Malone Design/Fabrication was contracted to design and implement this vision.  Tasked with enticing the visitor with a glimpse of the rich variety of things to see and do at this destination, our designers created a scene combining many of these areas elements.  Under a canopy of the large gnarled branches of giant live oak trees is a street scene of historic Savannah, complete with a replica trolley.  Visitors can take photos of their families ‘driving’ the trolley as if they were there or opt for a photo sitting on a bench beside a statue of Forrest Gump and his box of chocolates against the backdrop mural of Chippewa Square where the movie was shot.  Spanning the entire wall are numerous large images of many of the scenic and historic places offered in this area.  Across the hall, under a 20-foot tall replica of the majestic St Simons Lighthouse, sand dunes and a sea turtle sit against large murals of the Golden Isles beaches.  Visitors can activate the lighthouse light and listen to a far off ships horn.  A replica of a tabby and brick construction monument sign welcomes the visitor to the Golden Isles.  Digital media  was built into the graphic walls and exhibits to play endless images of these destinations, allowing visitors to explore more information on a website, and feature a live webcam feed of the beach.
