Through state-of-the-art interactive exhibits, River Discovery Center tells the story of the four rivers region of western Kentucky. Visitors experience a hands-on opportunity to see how the river has contributed to the culture and history of the area and the economic impact of commercial navigation. The museum features water-filled exhibits including an audio-visual enhanced rain table, complete with booming thunder and lightening which illustrates how floods are caused by a single drop of water. A working lock and dam demonstrates how boats maneuver up and down the river despite variations in channel depth. A hydroelectric dam shows how flowing water can be turned into electricity and demonstrates the power of water on the surrounding land. Mud microscopes enable visitors to view the river bottom. Sounds of the banjo, fiddle and calliope create a musical timeline and depict a bygone era of life along the river.
